A Tail of Origin:
Ancient Origins: Descended from the Teckel family and brought to Wales by Celtic tribes over 3,000 years ago. Named after Cardiganshire, Wales.
Early Roles: Initially cleared paths for cattle herds by driving off predators and trespassing herds. Later, they worked as herders, drovers, and even vermin exterminators.
Separation from Pembrokes: Viking-era Spitz influences led to Pembrokes, while Cardigans preserved their original lineage.
Dog Shows: First shown in the 1920s; recognized as a separate breed in 1934.
Arrival in America: First imported to the U.S. in 1932.
